Hackney residents, workers and students were invited to submit designs for Kingsland Shopping Centre’s new visual identity, with £2,000 awarded to the winner and £500 to each runner-up
London – 8th December 2025 – Kingsland Shopping Centre has today revealed the ten shortlisted designs for its landmark logo design competition, marking an exciting new phase in the reimagining of one of Dalston’s most recognisable destinations. The competition – organised by Criterion Capital on behalf of the landlord of the centre – invited Hackney residents, workers and students to help envision a new visual identity that reflects the area’s culture and creativity.
The shortlisted designers are: Omar Careaga, Bianca Baldacci, Georgia Illingworth, Edward Johnson, Priyal Tank, Maryna Gradnova, Nick Foot, T’shan Treasure, Jia You and Hannah Kheder.
Their work was selected by a panel of respected local voices, including Dame Meg Hillier (Labour MP for Hackney South and Shoreditch) and Rahima Aziz BEM (Trustee, The Aziz Foundation and The Association of Charitable Foundations), who reviewed a diverse range of submissions from across the area.
In celebration of Dalston’s creativity, all ten shortlisted designs – alongside a creative statement from each designer – will go on public display at the rear of Kingsland Shopping Centre, near the Matalan store, giving visitors the chance to explore the ideas, inspirations and stories behind each entry.
The shortlist now moves into a public vote, placing the next stage of the decision firmly in the hands of the Hackney community. Voting will run from 16th December 2025 to 6th January 2026, with participants able to cast their vote by collecting a form from the Customer Service Desk inside Sainsbury’s at Kingsland Shopping Centre.
Omar Aziz, Criterion Capital, commented: “The heart poured into these submissions is a powerful reflection of Dalston itself. Every design shows a clear connection to the culture, heritage and energy that make this neighbourhood so special. We’re incredibly proud to showcase the shortlisted work and to hand this next stage of the competition over to the community. We launched this competition to open the field – to widen access, celebrate imagination and ensure local talent could benefit from the process. The response has been phenomenal and the level of creativity has exceeded all expectations. Our sincere thanks go to our brilliant judges for the care, time and insight they brought to the selection process – we’re grateful for their continued support.”
Criterion Capital’s stewardship of Kingsland Shopping Centre includes an expanding programme of cultural, community-led and place-making initiatives – from launching the UK’s first Music Booth to supporting creative opportunities that amplify local talent. Each project is designed to celebrate Dalston’s identity while guiding its long-term evolution. This competition marks a significant milestone in that vision, giving local people a meaningful role in shaping the centre’s future.
The overall winner will be chosen by the Kingsland Shopping Centre team following the public vote. The winning designer will receive £2,000, with £500 awarded to each of the remaining four finalists.
Situated on Kingsland High Street, moments from Ridley Road Market, Kingsland Shopping Centre continues to play a central role in Dalston’s daily life – a hub where cultures meet, independent businesses thrive and local stories unfold. The new logo will mark the next chapter in this journey.
